Riddick: Pitch Black by malsem Riddick: Pitch Black by malsem
I just watched one of my all time favourite movies the other day.
Pitch Black (filmed in Australia and chock full of Aussies. Rahda Mitchel's a BABE ).
Anyhoo, I've always wanted to draw some of Riddick's Bad Boys as they are up there with some of the coolest movie monsters in existence and still relatively untouched as fan art (unlike Preds and Aliens etc).
But the only way to draw them, in my humble opinion, is barely seen in the dark as that is what makes them so creepy. So I decided to take inspiration from a scene in the movie where Ogilvie lights up the dark with a fireball that illuminates the creatures.
My only drama was I really suck at shadow pools and crosshatching and the like, usually leaving the shadows until the colouring stage.
So taking the opportunity to practice my skills, I came up with this.
I hope it works.
I'll probably get around to colouring it one day but if anyone wants to give it a go, just note me.

Done with Photoshop CS5 and a Wacom Intous3.

Love this picture

I like how the only light is white instead of using colour, creating an extremely powerful one without the use of colours, also a nice touch of recreating the scene where that one guy is surrounded by these creature in the dark

Brilliant work

P.S Rahda Mitchell is super hot ;)

Thanks mate, I always appreciate feedback, especially possitive feedback :) Yep, the whole point was to make the picture with very stark, hard light to emphasise the blackness. I don't think I'll ever get round to putting any colour to it but one day I wouldn't mind hitting it with some subtle, washed out tints for my own amusement...
Thanks again, and thanks for the Fave.

This picture is incredible! You're use of negative and positive space really lends itself to the intense atmosphere!!! I'd leave it as is, the black and white fits. That's just my personal opinion.
I had no idea it was filmed in Australia! That is so cool ^_^

Aww, thanks. You made me blush ;)
I'm a big fan of it in it's B&W stage too but I would like to try some subtle, moody colours and a few minor effects somewhere down the line though. You know, just for fun.
And yes, Pitch Black was filmed in Coober Pedy in South Aus. Apparently they scoured the world for a place that could be another planet and they settled on SA. (:D Sorry. Aussie joke).
BTW Thanks heaps for the fave and the comment.
